Off-campus Housing Webinar, Nov. 11

Question and Answer

Q: I have first-year transfer student. This is her first year on campus, but she will have enough credits to be a junior by next fall. Does she qualify for off-campus housing?

A: Yes – transfer students are exempt from the two-year requirement.

Q: Can juniors live on campus next year?

A: Our on-campus housing for students currently in their second year-plus has now closed. We will be opening a wait list in December for students who are interested in a space in an on-campus apartment.

Q: My daughter is currently an on-campus resident, as she is first-year engineering. We recently moved to Okemos, five miles away from MSU, and would like to opt out from living in an on-campus residence to stay with family. We tried to reach Live On admins through emails but did not get any confirmation/response.

A: Hello! She will be able to submit an exception in the spring semester. We will send more information soon!

Q: Is the only one option for apartments on campus, or can they live in the residence halls? I know my son applied for an apartment but was not selected.

A: When your student submitted the interest form, it included on-campus apartments, residence hall apartments and rooms in Owen Hall. Owen Hall was the only traditional option given to second year-plus students.

Q: My student has a scholarship that covers room and board now in the residence halls. Will this scholarship help cover the rent for an off-campus apartment or is rent solely the responsibility of the parents/student?

A: It is best to reach out directly to the administrator of the scholarship and the Office of Financial Aid to respond for your student's specific scholarship.

Q: My student is a freshman in OMSP program and had been living in Holmes Hall. I have heard that living on campus is mandatory for 2 years. Is that true? Can she move off campus to stay in an apartment?

A: Yes, they will be required to live on campus for two years unless they meet certain exception criteria. We'll have more information about the exception process on the Live On website is January 2023. First-year student housing selection for 2023-24 begins in spring 2023.
